Kalymnos Greece

Kalymnos Island: Offering a unique experience for a unique trip Kalymnos is a beautiful Greek island located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea. Famous for its sponge-divers, the tiny island (109 km²) has only recently opened its doors to tourism, offering a unique and authentic experience other island destinations cannot. The sea and the past play large roles in Kalymnos’s culture, and from the Sea and Archeological museums in the capital of Pothia to the black sands of nearby Platis Yialos beach it’s easy to see why. If aquatic life isn’t for you, Pothia also boasts famous stone mansions, and the Monastery of Agios Savvas, sure to drop the jaw of anyone interested in historical architecture. While the opening of Kalymnos’s doors has had little effect on the island, one city stands out as the main tourist stop. Located on an incline near the coast, Massouri is the top tourist destination on the island, and is host to numerous taverns, shops, hotels, and more which visitors will enjoy. It’s the most urban of the island cities, offering a familiar—but unique—feel. If you’d rather have a mix of the more modern Massouri and the more authentic Pothia, give Kantouni Village a try. Located on the beach south of Pothia, Kantouni is a short bus-ride away from the capital, and part of many bus routes. Kantouni features fine Grecian cuisine, unique to the island, as well as small shops, hotels, and bars dotting its streets, adjacent to its beach. For a more traditional sponge-diving town, give Emporio a try. The southernmost village of Kalymnos, Emporio served as one of the main hubs for sponge-divers, and still provides the quiet, tranquil feel of a small fishing village. Now that you’ve seen the major cities, your next goal is to see the beautiful beaches. From the Kalamies’s pebble beach to the black sands of Platis Gialos, each beach on Kalymnos offers something new, and at any time. The lush green landscapes mix seductively with the rhythmic crashing of the waves and the sheen of the oceanic rocks, creating beautiful sights and sounds throughout the island’s coast. If you’re feeling more adventurous you can visit the highly mountainous inner island. From world class rock climbing to dozens of caves, there’s plenty of room to explore on your own, or with groups, in the inner portions of Kalymnos. No matter where you go on Kalymnos—whether rock-climbing its cliffs, shopping at local shops, or exploring the beaches—the locals always add authentic spice to your experience, and are always friendly to visitors. Kalymnos may be a tiny island, but you will be hard-pressed to find nothing worthwhile, and many find it impossible to leave without a smile on their face, and good stories to tell those back home. After kalymnos you can visit Koufonisia Greece Hotels
